Who would have thought that when that mating was prepared, Ken Wetzel and Hillhaven Loft would put together back to back distance wins. The winner of Ravendale was born a late hatch and I had to put an old band on his leg, he is an '05 yearling.  Herlong race station is a 500 mile race for North San Diego County. The Combine Winner is Ken Wetzel of the Palomar Club. The Sire of the bird that won is from Omer Van Welleghem of Canada. The Sires' family goes back to Van de Veldes. Omer also crossed that family from Van de Veldes with birds from Imbrecht via Blackie Weinel. Click my On-Line-Catalogue to get more info on this family. Here is an interesting story. I put 2 cocks in a young bird auction race that is out of my Omer Van Welleghem breeder cock. One went to Andy Reagan AND one went to Ken Wetzel. Both gentleman were saying good things about the birds throughout YB racing. The day of the race comes and Ken tells me that he lost the young cock he was flying of mine. Andy had his bird return to the loft. To bad Mr.Wetzel, I was pleased to know that you enjoyed flying that bird. Did that bird ever make it home at any time after that day of the race?? One more quick line about the success of my family of Omer Van Welleghem Birds. Bill Fullmer of the Palomar club gave me a hen to mate to my Omer Van Welleghem Cock. I gave Bill a late round youngster from that mating, a mealy hen. Bill also has enjoyed flying that bird and held it back from the distance races.
